The Sacred Hinoki of the Grand Shrine: Connecting Two Centuries of Prayer to the Future.

Hinoki (Japanese cypress) is the ultimate sacred timber, beautifully gracing the most revered areas of the Ise Grand Shrine with its pure, pristine whiteness.

In fact, from the Edo period through the Meiji period, the mountains surrounding the shrine (known as the Kyuikirin) were on the verge of devastation due to repeated logging. Facing a crisis where hinoki for rebuilding the shrine could no longer be sourced locally, predecessors in the Taisho period launched an ambitious, grand plan. It was a boundless prayer in the form of forest creation: "Let us raise the sacred timber to support the Sengu (shrine rebuilding) two hundred years in the future with our own hands."

The beautiful hinoki forest we see today is the very crystallization of life, passed down and cherished tree by tree across generations—from Taisho, Showa, Heisei, to Reiwa.

Furthermore, hinoki possesses an extraordinary vitality, with its strength continuously increasing for 200 to 300 years after being harvested. The ancient hinoki timber from the old shrines, having fulfilled its role in the ritual rebuilding, is never discarded. Transformed into torii gates or used for repairs at shrines across Japan, it continues to live on for four to five hundred years.

At our shop, this hinoki—imbued with a dizzying depth of history and a pure, sacred breath—has been sublimated by the hands of Ise artisans into beautiful works that gently accompany your daily life.

We invite you to enjoy the dignified aroma that unfolds with every touch, and the serene sense of time flowing into the future, as part of your everyday life.
